7 questions to ask before hiring any landscaper

Most landscaping disputes happen because something wasn't asked up front. These seven questions cover the real risk areas — registration, references, scope, warranties, permits, JULIE / 811 calls, and debris.

1. Are you registered with the City of Crystal Lake?

   Illinois has no statewide general landscaping license, but many municipalities require contractors to register locally and show proof of liability insurance. Verify the current rules at crystallake.org.

2. Can I see three references within 10 miles?

   Local references let you drive by the work and see how it's holding up. Out-of-area references aren't as useful — climate, soil, and code conditions are different.

3. Is the estimate fixed or time-and-materials?

   Fixed estimates protect your budget. Time-and-materials can balloon if scope isn't tight. Get the estimate type in writing.

4. What's your warranty on plants and workmanship?

   Reputable pros offer a one-year plant warranty and 2+ years on hardscape workmanship. Get specifics in writing — what triggers a replacement, how to claim, what's excluded.

5. Who pulls permits for hardscape / drainage work?

   Patios over 144 sqft and any drainage that ties into the street usually need a city permit. That's the contractor's job — not yours. Confirm before signing.

6. Will you handle the JULIE / call-811 locate before digging?

   Illinois law requires a locate-request 48 hours before any digging. The contractor should call JULIE — you shouldn't have to.

7. How do you handle leftover debris and soil?

   Haul-away should be in writing. Otherwise you end up with a pile of spoil in the side yard for months.
